YouTube Gets The Wonder Wheel

by Shagun Vatsa on June 19, 2009

Attending the video search panel last week at the SES Toronto gave me a great insight into the evolution of search and how optimizing for video search is gaining momentum against the good old organic SEO. With statistics showing that Youtube is now the second largest search engine and Canada is the global leader in online video watching (ComScore),  enhancing the search capabilities of online video viewers is a must!

YouTube has done exactly that with the introduction of its own Wonder Wheel. Wonder Wheel was first introduced by Google amongst its many other search options in early May. The Wonder Wheel is a graphical representation of related searches that helps a user navigate deeper into the main query. So when you perform a search on YouTube, lets say “Susan Boyle”, you will see the Wonder Wheel option come up on the top right corner. Clicking on it will show you the diagram below.

Upon clicking on one of the branches, a new wheel is created with a different set of related searches compared to the original one.

If this is not enough, YouTube has also improved its “Advanced Options”. You can now refine your search based on duration, language, category, location and when a particular video was uploaded.

So go ahead folks, enjoy the new tweaks and enhance the way you find videos on YouTube. Happy Viewing!

Neat stuff Shagun – I didn’t know Youtube was incorporating the Wonderwheel as well.

Yep! It’s as recent as today actually. I’m looking forward to seeing how all these changes contribute to the future of search. We are already seeing an uptrend in the importance of local search and video is following closely behind!
